Memorable blog posts in 2009: Mr. Magic (RIP)

The final 2009 post can only have one subject: the death of Mr. Magic. The voice of hip hop died on the 2nd of October from a heart attack.

I posted a lot of rap attack shows in the days after his death. Others did the same and the importance of Magic was discussed on lot’s of forums. Many where reminiscing about their youth, how they were introduced to hip hop by Mr. Magic, while listening to his radio show. It showed not only the importance of Magic, but also of hip hop in general for a whole generation.

But when I look back, I have to conclude that this was only a temporary ‘revival’. Check for example these statistics from Google Trends, it speaks for itself. After a few days the term 'mr. magic' was as often searched on Google as before october 2nd.

For most people, it was nice to look back, but after that, it’s ‘back to their daily lives’.

And that strengthen my believe about the importance of taking care of the hip hop heritage in the digital age.

There was an interesting discussion on my blog about the idea to build an online archive ( ). And to be honest, I don’t think that this will be realized in 2010, but maybe someday :-). In the meanwhile, I will keep sharing tapes, just like others did before me and hopefully more will do in the future.

And finally, to end 2009 properly, i want to give shout outs to freeze, troy, simmo, Oxygene, ramses, olskool4real, and one, gmm, djbite, cutperseboy, repo136, soulman, jimmy, gee, julian, stretch, rich, supremeunknown, memoryman, a to the l, bobs, keimo, Andrew, Sami, Brandan, gildog, 238beats, djest, Irish Craig, Waxer, Mixmasta Tee and all other old school tape lovers! Thanx for keeping the spirit of the early days alive!

Have a great NYE and a happy New Year!

Memorable blog posts in 2009: The Wyandanch High School tape and the Philly, YMCA on 52nd St. tape from 1985

Like the banner stated: I started this blog to share some of my tapes to keep the spirit of the early days alive. But I also hoped that others would be inspired to do the same. Through their own channels or by hitting me up with some of their tapes so I could upload these on my blog.
Several visitors did, like Ginja, Andrew, Sami, Steva AKA Bobs and Mixmasta Tee. Big props to them and I hope that they, and others, will do the same in 2010.
But I have to thank especially one person, who surprised us in December with 2 ultra rare tapes. Of course I’m talking about Oxygen and his Wyandanch High School tape (with a young Rakim and Bizz Markie) and Philly tape (with Jazzy Jeff, Cash Money and Spinbad).

It was very interesting to see how the rumor about the uploaded Rakim tape spread the web and it was discussed on many forums. And although the Philly tape was not overlooked, i think that olschool4real has stated correctly that it looks like the interest for Philly's foundation doesn't draw that much interest. IMO that’s a shame.

For those who like to know more about the Wyandanch HS tape: check Jesse Serwer’s blog, especialy and (interview with Oxygen)

Memorable blog posts in 2009: Whiz Kid’s House Tape

I started my blog about a year ago. And because these are the last days of 2009, I want to finish this year with a ‘countdown’ by looking back at 3 posts from the past year that where special to me.

The first is the Whiz Kid’s House Tape that I posted in 2 parts (in February and March). This is special to me because it is one of my favorite tapes. Listening to this tape makes me both happy and sad at the same time.

It makes me happy because to me this is hip hop in its purest form. Raw and creative. Whiz kid is showing some incredible skills, especially when you keep in mind that this is a tape from 1981.

But it also makes me sad, knowing that Whiz Kid died in the late 80’s, apparently from a brain tumor and that there is hardly any information on Whiz Kid on the web. The fact that there are generations of hip hop fans and DJ’s that probably have never heard of him, makes me want to share this tape on every blog, just to tell people ‘listen, learn and don’t forget’.

For those who want to know some more about Whiz Kid, here is a quote from MC Lucky on the OSHH forum about the way Whiz started his ‘dj career’:
"Originally Harold (Whiz Kid) didn't even want to dj...he just did it in the house. Ironically me (MC Lucky) and his brother Mike (Mike G) had another dj who is the brother of the late Pumpkin. We finally convinced Harold G (as he was known) to join us, we dropped the other dj, and became DJ Whiz Kid and the High Powered MCs. I lived in Twin Parks (183 & Prospect) so I would bring Harold and Mike around and we started playing music in the projects. Later we added Cisco who used to hang out with Charlie Chase and we became the High Powered 3 MCs. After doing a lot of block stuff we started doing the T-Connection with Herc and that's when Whiz Kid really blew up."

For those of you who missed the original blog posts: here are the 2 parts of the house tape:

Some of my favorite old school hip hop radio snippets (world famous, chuck chillout, marley marl, zulu beat show and more!)

At this moment i listen mostly to old school hip hop radio tapes. It's always nice to browse through your collection, hearing something that you haven't heard for a long time.
But there are some tapes that never bore me and i bookmarked the favorite parts on my mp3 player. I think you can find them all on my blog, but here are those snippets. Especially for those blog visitors who don't find the time to listen to all the uploaded tapes :-)

The World Famous Supreme Team Show (WHBI) are one of kind. One of the things i like best where the live callers. This is a 8.11 minute snippet from june 1982, including a crank caller.

Wild Style was the first motion hip hop picture. In this snippet from the Zulu Beat Show on WHBI, Fab 5 Freddy is talking about the movie (april 1983)

A true mashup from december 1983 as part of a KISS FM Mastermix dance party!!! Tony Humphries is mixing GLOBE and Whiz Kid's Play that beat with Heavy Vibes from the Montana Sextet for more then 5 minutes. Maybe from a technical point of view not a perfect mix but man, this has a jazzy hip hop sound that can't be beat.

A great Christmas 1984 KISS FM Mastermix by DJ Chuck Chillout (7.18 minutes)

And finally: Marley Marl showing his skills on the wheels of steel in a 1985 Mr Magic Rap Attack Show on WLBS (11.06 minutes)

Let me know what's your favorite snippet!

DJ Clark Kent on WBLS 1990

Sean and J-Carlitos dropped a request in the c-box. I uploaded a CCB (with Charlie Chase on the wheels of steel) yesterday and today it's time for Clark Kent on WBLS.

But i also decided to make a guideline regarding the usage of the c-box as a 'request line'. To make it a fair deal and to serve the purpose of this blog, here are some guidelines:
* only ask for a tape if you are willing to share one of your own;
* drop a link to an original upload (no links to other blogs) in the c-box or in my mailbox and tell me what you are looking for (tip: check my other blog for an overview of my collection)
* your tape must be within the scope of this blog.

No tapes to share? Well, let me share 200+ of mine first. Don't tell me that that's a bad deal :-)

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five live at Edeamore center 1980 (download)

I think its time for a live tape. So here is another show from Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five.
They are playing live at Edeamore center in 1980. The tape starts with the Funky Drummer and lot's of other classic funk tracks follow. The Furious Five are dropping lot's of names and are performing Superrappin'. The crowd loves it.

New York wake up and take care of your hip hop heritage in the digital age before it's too late

The death of Mr Magic was for many a moment to reminisce about the time they where introduced to hip hop. Taping Mr Magic, Afrika Islam, The World Famous Supreme Team and other shows. Or about the joy of getting your hands on a copy of a Grandmaster Flash, Zulu Nation or Treacherous 3 blockparty. Those tapes traveled around the world. Spreading the news about the birth of a new music (and culture!) form called hip hop.

Many of those who decided to search the web the last week, trying to find some Mr Magic shows, landed on my blog or youtube channel. I think that most of them hadn’t heard a show for many years.

At first, it felt good that there where so many visitors on my site. But then I realized that there is something fundamentally wrong!
Why are sites, like the in their post about the death of Mr Magic, pointing to my site for those who want to listen to a show?

I have never been to New York (although I’m hoping to run the NY marathon one day) or even the US. Sure, I can feel hip hop running through my blood when I hear Flash or Whiz kid on the wheels of steal. But how is it possible that there are almost no live and radio shows online? And how about the fact that the probably largest online old school tape collection is managed by an hip hop loving 'volunteer' from a small European country?

Why do ‘old school headz’ talk about the tapes in their basements without taking action before it’s too late? And why is there so little interest in the early days of hip hop, besides when one of the founders dies?

Is there hope? Yes of course. I see tapemasters like Troy L Smith and Johnnie Freeze sharing pieces of their huge collections and many, like me, are thankful for that. I see some forums where hip hop fans meet and hip hop artists can be spotted here ‘in the wild’. But I think that’s not enough. It’s like a small family, sharing memories around the campfire.

However, that is not the way you should preserve your heritage. Look around and you see many initiatives to build digital online collections for cultural reasons. Libraries are doing it, Museums are doing it and even Google is doing it.

Sure, there will be some (legal) obstacles. But they can be overcome and this is not about making money! This is about preventing that an essential part of our hip hop culture is lost forever.
New York wake up! Tapemasters, radio stations, hip hop ‘industry’ and archive and internet experts join forces.
Build an online campfire, let people share there tapes and stories, restore old footage from radio stations and let old folks (like me) reminisce about ‘the good old days’ while the younger generations can discover the energy and the creativity that founded this art form.

First time Dutch radio listeners where introduced to scratching? Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel on Dutch Radio, 1981-06-18

This is a snippet from Ferry Maat's Soul Show.
He opens his show (dated the 18th of june 1981) with my all time favorite record: the adventures of grandmaster flash on the wheels of steel. After 4.16 the 12inch stops but the last part is played at the end of the show.
This could very well be the first time that Dutch radio listeners where introduced to scratching!!!
I have combined both snippets to 1 mp3.

For the non-dutch visitors of this blog i will translate some lines.
3:38: don't think that there is something wrong with the turntable, this is the way it suppose to sound. At the end of the show i will play some more.
4.36: there he goes again. That strange track from Grandmaster Flash.

Great source for free viewable hip hop articles and books

Ok, this post is not about tapes, it's about books. But if you want to know everything about (old school) hip hop, then i maybe have a great source for you.

Google books contains, as some of you may know, many books and other publications. It has both search and preview options. One feature is IMO very exiting: you can filter your search results and f.e. only look for "full view only". You can even choose for filtering on a combination of "full view only" and 'books'. Even when you look at books with limited preview options, you still can read lots of interesting pages and look at many, many great photo's.

For those who don't know Google Books and/or are not familiar with advanced search options, i made some example queries.

Free viewable publications about hip hop that where published in the 80's:"hip+hop"&as_brr=1

the book 'Graffiti' By Sandrine Pereira (free viewable!): ... q=&f=false

books with 'hip hop' in the title that can be previewed: ... p&as_brr=3

French old school hip hop: Free Style rapping on Radio Nova and Dee Nasty on the wheels of steel

You can find lot's of US and UK hip hop tapes on my blog and even some Dutch mixtapes. But thanx to Andrew everybody can now enjoy also some original french hip hop from back in the days.
How come? Well, Craig asked some time ago "Do you have any Radio Nova stuff, Dee Nasty or anything from that station ? Anyone know where I can find vintage Dee Nasty ?" in the cbox.
I hadn't, but Andrew responded that he had some. And today he mailed me 2 mp3's and 1 mpg.

Andrew, big props to you my friend. After MixMasta Tee, you are the 2nd one this week who mailed me some tapes to share and that makes me happy :-)

Chuck Chillout on KISS FM, november / december '87

I recieved a mail from MixMasta Tee from New Zealand. He has a lot of original NY hip hop tapes from the 80's - mid 90's and is starting to convert them.

This is the first one, a Chuck Chillout show from 1987. Based on the commercials it must be (end of) november / december.
One of my favorite parts is when Chuck can't wait till a commercial about pregnancy testing is over and starts rocking the bells (part A, after 36 minutes).

MixMasta, i know you make a lot of old school headz happy with this (i'm having a big smile on my face...).

Looking forward to the next one!

Dr Dre Operating Room show with KRS ONE and Scott La Rock, 1987-02-10

This is not just another old school radio show. The operating room shows from Dr. Dre are very hard to find. And this one is imo very special. It contains an interview with KRS and Scott La Rock (6 months before his death) about the bridge wars, one of the important chapters of hip hop history.
Scott is dissing Mr Magic, Shan and the Juice Crew and KRS is talking about The bridge and the reason to write 'the bridge is over'.
This is like a time capsule back to 1987.

DJ Whiz Kid house tape, 1981 (part2)

Here is the second part of the tape. This one is dedicated to my man Freeze.

But also a personal note to all of you. The fact that there where no comments about the first part of this tape (and earlier posts the last weeks) makes me sad. For me, the fun part of sharing is some feedback. Some comments about the tape or your personal memories about the early days of hip hop. Well, you know what i'm talking about.

Just once: Ben Liebrand 'in the mix' 1983-10-29 (dutch radio)

Haven't posted any dutch radio shows but for once i uploaded one of my favorite mixes from Ben Liebrand. Like the early NY hip hop radio shows, 'in the mix' was broadcasted after midnight (2 till 3). I often set the alarm to tape the show, waking up early to listen what i had 'caught' on tape because Liebrand mixed tracks you never heard elswhere on dutch radio.
In this 'in the mix' he played various hip hop tracks, so i.m.o. within the scope of this blog :-)

Westwood Capital Rap Show with ICE T, 1988-10-15

DJ Red Alert @ KISS FM, 1986

another radioshow from '86. If someone knows the exact date: let me know.

What's your favorite old school radio jock?

Nice to see so many of you entering the poll. For a long time it was a close race but in the end Red Alert won the most votes. So the next upload will be a show of him.
But because 'world famous', westwood, mike allen and Magic and Marley Marl joined a sec0nd place, just behind Red, i will upload something of them too :-)
