Grand Wizard Theodore and Mean Gene live on 3rd avenue Ballroom in 1977, part one

The name and date of this tape says it all: this is hip hop history. Grand Wizard Theodore and his brother Mean Gene are playing some classic breaks like Apache and the Star Wars theme. Also many nursery rhymes. Dated 1977, this tape shows you the DNA of hip hop!

  8. This is the oldest tape I have ever come across. Essential preservation of hip hop history. If you got more, we need it and want it and will be ever greatful for it. This is crazy./Chris

  9. Its not 1977. Its more like 1979, or very late 1978. Shangri La didn't come out until later 1978.

  10. @all: thanx for the comments, i will upload some more soon.
Regarding 1977: the tape is dated by troy smith. His knowledge regarding these kind of classic tapes is without questioning and he has much info at first hand. But i'm always open to discussion, so more remarks about the date are welcome!

  11. I know people (not you) like to date tapes, but it is impossible for this to have come out in 1977, for two reasons. There are at least one record that didn't get released until 1978. then you need to consider those records probably took some time before they were "found" and ended up being "break records."

btw. keep up the great work.. LOVE your blog and history... wish more people would appreciate old school..
