Some of my favorite hip hop tapes (4): Wyandanch High School Jam '85 Featuring: Biz Markie, Kid Wizard Rakim, Chilly Dawg, Grandw. BMC & DJ Fanatasy

Oxygen dropped this piece of history in my mailbox in december 2009. It's the full recording of the Wyandance High School Jam from 1985, including the pre-party featuring another local crew and became one of my most viewed, discussed en cited blog posts.

Wyandanch High School Jam (1985)
Featuring: Biz Markie, Kid Wizard Rakim, MC Chilly Dawg, Grandwizard BMC & DJ Fantasy, Inc.

(1 of 2): The pre-party festivities jumped off by DJ Fantasy, Inc. rocking over the vintage 'beatbox' drum machine.

(2 of 2): The main event featuring Biz Markie with DJ Grandwizard BMC (from the group Groove B. Chill) joined by MC Chilly Dawg(aka Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, also from Groove B. Chill). Later on, a VERY SPECIAL impromptu guest appearance from none other than the Kid Wizard Rakim Allah!!! He drops a couple of verses including the epic '7 mc's'(track #10 in the folder)

I take 7 MC's put 'em in a line
Add 7 more brothas who think they can rhyme
Well, it'll take 7 more before I go for mine
Now that's 21 MC's ate up at the same time

Some of my favorite hip hop tapes (3): Grandmaster Flash

My personal all time hip hop hero is Grandmaster Flash. So, again, one tape isn't enough :-)

The first tape is Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel @ Christ the King High School - 1979. http://www.mediafire.com/?e1a1bce12a37aog
Flash is mixing and scratching like his live is depending on it. The tape starts with Melle Mel trying to controll the crowd to prevent a panic, adding an intense atmosphere to the whole tape.

The next 3 tapes are related to my all time favorite record 'The adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the wheels of steel' from 1981.

Grandmaster Flash and Kurtis Blow Live in Queens NY: http://www.mediafire.com/?rrza12vfo2w8v2w
Two legends teaming up in 1981. What makes this tape extra special is that it contains the famous The Hellers' Life Story sample that Flash used in the adventures of grandmaster flash on the wheels of steel. Flash is mixing it up with Good Times. Not sure if this tape (16.50 minutes) is dated before or after the release of that single.

And on Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five @ The Peppermint Lounge, New York, 1983-03-25 http://www.mediafire.com/?xr5qub5d1c7cqjt Flash plays 'the adventures' live! Only without The Life Story sample. It's the only tape i have that contains a live version of the track.

Last tape is a snippet from the famous Dutch 'Ferry Maat's Soul Show' dated 18th of June 1981. http://www.mediafire.com/?5xdk48249wpk6oa
Ferry Maat opens his show with The adventures of grandmaster flash on the wheels of steel. After 4.10 the 12inch stops but the last part is played at the end of the show.
This could very well be the first time that Dutch radio listeners where introduced to scratching!!!
I have combined both snippets to 1 mp3.

For the non-dutch visitors of this blog i will translate some lines.
3:30: don't think that there is something wrong with the turntable, this is the way it suppose to sound. At the end of the show i will play some more.
4.30: there he goes again. That strange track from Grandmaster Flash.

This second 'favorite hip hop tapes' post is all about radio and one of it's pioneers: Mr Magic. And because it wouldn't do 'Sir Juice' justice to re-up just 1 tape, here are 2 great tapes and some classic snippets.

Some of my favorite hip hop tapes (1): MR. BOND, MR. HYDE, STARCHILD & RONNIE GREEN - Foster Center '79

Because most of the file sharing sites i used are down, i can't claim anymore that this blog contains the biggest collection of old school live and radio hip hop tapes on the web. And it would take to much time to rebuild it.
However, to share some hip hop history to new visitors and keep the old school vibe alive i will upload 10 of my favorite tapes in the next weeks.

The first one is pre 1980 and contains several classic old school elements like the nursery rhymes, the funk breaks and the usage of the echo chaimber. But what makes the tape extra special to me is the energy of the rappers and the creativity of the dj.
Mr. Bond, Mr. Hyde, Starchild and Ronnie Green (a.k.a. Captain Rock) are performing at their best. And how about using Country & Western: Black Grass - Bad Bascomb (Everybody got to get some)? For those who think that Run DMC was innovative using aerosmith's 'walk this way': check the tape after 14.30 minutes (part 1) and 6 minutes (part 2).
This is raw New York hip hop, right at your face.
Yes Yes Ya'll, To The Beat Ya'll and You Don't Stop.

The sound quality isn't to good but it brings some extra authenticity to it :-)

would love to hear some opinions about this tape!

File sharing sites down and files not found

To all blog visitors: most of my tapes where shared through multiupload and megaupload. Both file sharing sites are down because of legal issues. The links to zshare are also not working anymore (file not found).
If you are desperately looking for a tape: drop me an email. I will re-upping some classic tapes but it would take to much time to rebuild the whole site.
I hope that most of you discovered my blog early enough to download some of the shared gems.

Peace
Dutch
